William led him to the edge of the bath and climbed in first, holding out his arms to help Rowan. “Come, my pet, I’ll make sure you don’t need to exert yourself,” He said and Rowan smiled softly.

But William took a moment to look at it and smiled, tempted to reach out to touch it. However, he took pause as Rowan’s whines reminded him of the boy who was crying in front of him. “Oh, my dear, does it hurt awfully?” He asked kindly and Rowan opened his eyes, biting his lip tightly as he swallowed. “I-I’ll be fine, my liege, just-please give me a moment.” William pulled him up to sit on the edge of the bath and brushed Rowan’s hair softly. “Don’t worry, my dear, we can go to a cooler bath.” He offered and climbed up, helping Rowan to his feet as well. “I’m so sorry, my liege, please, I will be better in the future.” Rowan breathed as he was led to a different pool. “Oh, my beauty, I know, I know it’s been a hard while. Soon you’ll be back to normal.” William replied and was surprised to feel Rowan shake his head against his chest. “N-no, my liege, I don’t want to be the way I was before! I-I was awful! I was so horribly disrespectful, and rude, and completely undeserving of your kindness! I-I’ve learned now, I know I need to be good, I know how to properly devote myself to you now!” Rowan looked up at him with deliciously desperate eyes and William leaned down, kissing him gently. “You were perfectly good for me, my dear. I should have listened to you about not wanting to be with Charles. Maybe it’s my own fault.” Rowan jumped slightly and pressed a hand to William’s chest. “My liege, of course not!” He gasped and curled into him timidly. “I should have done what you requested without argument, then this wouldn’t have happened.” He looked down and gently butted William’s chest with his head, William cooed at him gently and stroked his hair, glad that the boy couldn’t see the pleased grin across his lips. “How about we put this whole matter to rest, huh?” He suggested, stroking Rowan’s matted hair carefully. “Wash away the event with all the dirt and grime that’s caking you, all right?” He watched as Rowan looked up adoringly and nodded. “Please, my liege, I promise, I will be good for you, I-I’ll be perfect!” He gasped and kissed William, releasing a little sound in his throat that always intoxicated William. “My good, little pet,” He said, pulling away. “You’re already being perfect for me.”

The water in this bath was room-temperature, the slight warmth still thrummed against Rowan’s burn, but he would bear it.

I’m not offering out of obligation. I have people who can do that, but do you want me to?” He asked, lips brushing Rowan’s neck gently. “Mgn, nothing would bring me more pleasure, my liege,” He purred in reply and William grinned, eyebrows lurking lower as his smirk took on a more malicious air. “Of course, then, my petal, anything for my loyal little fairy.” He hasn’t called me that in a long time. It’s kind of nice, I suppose. He’s already showed his desire for me, I’m sure I can convince myself to fall in love with him. Maybe then his angry episodes will be fewer and further between. Rowan grumbled blissfully as the weeks of oil, sweat and blood was washed from his hair, William’s fingers massaging his scalp in such a gentle way Rowan could never believe anything vicious behind his actions. But with every little murmur of happiness and desire, the Prince’s grin broadened. “There, silky smooth once again.” He finally said and kissed the natural part in the boy’s hair. “Thank you, my liege, I promise to repay you,” He moaned and William nodded affirmatively. “You will,” He replied and stood up, bringing the freshly-cleaned boy with him, and taking him to the changing room. “Now come, I’m sure dinner is almost ready. You’ve grown so thin.” Rowan looked at him so hopefully William reminded was reminded of one of his hounds, when they were a pup, asking silently to be allowed to devour the bird they had just fetched. 

The boy was practically wagging his tail as the idea of being fed was offered to him.

Marie and Alexander weren’t waiting for once, William had made it to the dining room before them, Rowan following contently behind him. “Here, I think you can sit with the grown-ups tonight.” William said as he pulled out a chair beside the head of the table, offering it to Rowan. “I-I, my liege, I can’t!” He squeaked and turned his wide, dark eyes to William. “Wh-what would your fiancée say?” He added and William snorted, pressing a kiss to the boy’s temple as he was guided into the seat. Rowan winced as his recent burn was moved again, but remained silent. “You’ve been through a lot recently, my dear, who cares what she thinks?” He breathed against Rowan’s ear and kissed it. “You need a proper meal, Merek clearly didn’t listen when I told him to make sure you were sustained.” He told Merek to feed me? He didn’t want me to get sick. Even while I was being punished he wanted to offer a kindness. Rowan purred as William’s lips grazed his neck and heard the rumbling chuckle from his chest as he pressed his lips against Rowan’s jaw. “You’d like to be fed, wouldn’t you?” Rowan rumbled blissfully in reply as the taste of potato peels clawed at the back of his tongue. “My liege, please do not spoil me,” He gasped sadly as William moved away. “That’s how I became so disrespectful.” William paused for a moment, brushing the boy’s lips with his thumb, a soft smirk pulling at his lips. Merek’s punished him cruelly. He’s done very well. I quite like my pet like this. “My petal,” He breathed as his fingers slid through Rowan’s freshly cleaned hair. “I will treat you however I desire. If I think my dearest little pet deserves some pampering, then he will get it. I know he’ll pay me back for the kindness.” He said, cupping the boy’s cheek and eliciting a tender moan. “I will, my liege, however that may be.” He replied and William grinned. “Good, pet. Then please, enjoy a meal with me.” Rowan nodded eagerly as William sat down and picked up the linen napkin by his cutlery. “But do remember your manners. Marie will surely have an issue with this. Try and avoid what happened last time.” He added as he shook it out and rested it on his lap. Last time. Poison. Summary of the rules - a point of stability

Continuing to explain to myself this program I am writing in response to the transformation of a pointed Hebrew text into one that conforms to standard hebrew spelling.

Right now I have 143 explicit named 'rules' governing subsets of Hebrew stems and their various word forms. That means 143 distinct sets of transformations that apply to a set of stems.

Do they make sense? 

Here for example is the first entry below: gvi, irw, mdi each allow double i /ii/ in the calculated SimHebrew word, whatever its origin. That is the only 'rule' applied to these stems. I see that each of these stems has an /i/ in it, so this collection is not contradictory. Allow double i would be a silly rule for say the stem dbr since dbr by default does not allow i. For dbr to appear with allow double i, there would have to be another rule attached to it that allowed i for some condition.

The next rule collection is allow double i, allow i and the two stems that have this rule are ml't and yl, neither of which allows i as a default, so again the rule is self-consistent. 

A little further down I saw rules I would question just as I noted above. How can words that don't allow i get to have a double i? Sure enough, when I removed those from the rule, it made no difference to the results.

A little further down, there was a rule that combined allow_i with allow_i_v. The rules that allow i as well as allowing i for prefix i are OK since i with prefix i translates into a forced double i. But to allow i with prefix v is a subset of allowing i, so the rule is redundant. Equally if i is allowed implicitly and not explicitly prevented, then rules that are subsets of allowing i can be removed. I removed about 11 such redundancies.

Remember Occam's razor.

And so on. What I should do at some point is remove all the specific references to stems as rules from the code and put them into a database as I have in these now 143 cases. Then I could invent some additional language analysis. Maybe when it's easier to do that than just adding more rules I might do it. (Programmers take the route with the fewest obstacles.)

A word about o. The default is to allow it, so if it isn't wanted, a rule must specifically prevent it. So there is a rule below entitled prevent_o. It applies to 9 stems in the test data. I have been in tension whether to name every rule. A single rule that has exceptions for every stem presents a problem. Too many rules! So I oscillate between those I can easily remember and a search for specific combinations of letters and vowels.

A SimHebrew experiment

This is not translation but a consonant by consonant transcription to enable more efficient technical communication.

I had written a transcription algorithm 10 years ago and in a few hours was able to tweak it to do SimHebrew. See this paper by Jonathan Orr-Stav for the details of what SimHebrew is designed for and its relationship to the evolution of . The mapping is implicit in this image.

SimHebrew has a number of differences from a straight translation of consonants. It uses an escaped 't' for ט with single quote as the escape character. It also requires the letters u and o for vav's that act as vowels. These could not be distinguished with automation without the following vowel in the text. This underlines the importance of coding sequence when transcribing a manuscript from Hebrew. It would be consonant, marks affecting the consonant like dagesh, then vowel, then accents. I would never expect more than one vowel per consonant, but more than one accent is fine.

In the process of investigating this I found some oddball coding of a diphthong in two instances of the Hebrew text. These are Lam 3:25 לְקוָֹ֔ו and Isaiah 49:23 קוָֹֽי. I don't know what this is so I put a question on the Tiberian Hebrew forum to see what they might say.

A few things I have noted about the limitations of Unicode for Biblical Hebrew:

It does not distinguish silluq, metheg, and ga'ya as noted in a discussion here.

And in the exercise I just did for fun yesterday, it fails to distinguish between dagesh, mappiq and shuruq.

To me these are curiosities only, but they did raise questions which I added to the forum on Tiberian Hebrew.

To test my theory of coding sequences, here is an example from Psalms 18:1.

(Painful - won't do any more of this - but I could write a program to test my data for exceptions. I would find plenty in the NT sections where I do not expect to be continuing any Hebrew transcriptions.) This is the SimHebrew for the Psalm, transcription bugs removed I hope. (I have no intention of doing this again in any case).
